Welcome November: The Way You Love Yourself Teaches Others How to Treat You
7 Steps to Reconnect With Yourself, Set Healthy Boundaries, and Embrace Self-Love
New month. New boundaries. Deeper self-love. A new opportunity to choose yourself.
As we welcome November, I want to talk about something that has completely changed the way I see myself, my relationships, and the energy I allow into my life.
We teach people how to treat us through the boundaries we set, the behaviors we accept, and the love and respect we show ourselves. This doesn't mean we're responsible for how other people choose to behave. We are responsible for recognizing what feels healthy for us, communicating our needs, and deciding what we will continue to allow into our lives. For years, I was the person who wanted to make sure everyone else was okay. I loved helping people, showing up for others, and making sure the people around me felt supported. Through my own self-love and healing journey, I've learned that there's a difference between being kind and constantly sacrificing your own peace to keep everyone else happy. Sometimes, the person who needs your love, understanding, and compassion the most is you.

1. Self-Love Is More Than Just Feeling Good About Yourself
When people hear the words self-love, they often think about taking a relaxing bath, getting a massage, or treating themselves to something nice. While those things can absolutely be forms of self-care, true self-love goes much deeper. Self-love is how you speak to yourself when things aren't going your way. It's how you respond when someone disrespects you.
It's choosing to honor your feelings instead of dismissing them to make someone else comfortable. It's recognizing when you're exhausted and allowing yourself to rest without guilt. Sometimes, self-love is having the courage to walk away from a relationship, friendship, or environment that no longer supports the person you're becoming.
Self-love isn't just about how you feel about yourself. It's about how you choose to treat yourself every single day. The more you practice self-love, the more you begin to recognize your own worth. When you know your worth, you become more intentional about who and what you allow into your life.
2. We Teach People How to Treat Us Through Our Boundaries
Here's something I've had to learn through my own experiences. When you constantly say yes when you want to say no, people may begin to expect that you'll always be available.
When you continue giving without expressing your own needs, others may not realize how much you're carrying. When you repeatedly accept behavior that hurts you without addressing it, that behavior can become a pattern in the relationship. That's why healthy boundaries are so important. Boundaries aren't about controlling other people. They're about taking responsibility for yourself. They're about communicating what you need, what you value, and what you're willing to participate in.
For example:
"I care about you, but I don't have the capacity to help with that right now."
"I value our friendship, but I need our relationship to feel more balanced."
"I'm not comfortable being spoken to that way."
"I need time for myself, and I'm not available today."
You don't have to be mean, angry, or disrespectful to establish boundaries. You can be loving and firm at the same time. The people who genuinely respect you may not always agree with your boundaries, but they can learn to honor them. Remember, someone else's disappointment doesn't automatically mean you've done something wrong.
3. Letting Go Is a Form of Self-Love, Even When It Hurts
One of the hardest parts of personal growth is accepting that not everyone is meant to remain in your life forever. Sometimes, friendships change. Relationships grow apart. The things that once felt comfortable no longer feel aligned with who you're becoming.
And that can be incredibly painful. I think it's important to acknowledge that letting go isn't always this beautiful, peaceful experience. Sometimes, it's sad. You grieve the memories, the connection, the time you invested, and the future you thought you would share with that person. You may even question whether you made the right decision. But here's what I've learned. You can miss someone and still recognize that the relationship was no longer healthy for you. You can appreciate the good memories without ignoring the experiences that hurt you. You can forgive someone without giving them the same access to your life. You can wish someone well while choosing a different path for yourself.
As you move through that grief, you may begin to experience something you didn't have before: clarity.
Clarity about your needs.
Clarity about your worth.
Clarity about the kind of people and relationships you want to surround yourself with.
Letting go doesn't mean the relationship meant nothing. Sometimes, it means you've learned what you needed to learn, and you're ready to move forward.
4. Surround Yourself With People Who Give You Energy, Not Just Take It
Have you ever spent time with someone and walked away feeling happy, inspired, and excited about life? Now think about the times you've spent with someone and walked away feeling emotionally exhausted, anxious, or questioning yourself. Pay attention to those experiences. Our relationships can have a powerful influence on our emotional well-being, confidence, and personal growth. As you continue your healing journey, I encourage you to become more intentional about the people you surround yourself with.
Find people who celebrate your accomplishments without making everything a competition.
People who speak positively about you when you're not around.
People who stand up for you when you're not in the room.
People who respect your boundaries and encourage you to continue growing.
People who can have honest conversations with you, even when those conversations are uncomfortable. Most importantly, people who make you feel safe being your authentic self. Remember, healthy relationships are a two-way street.
Ask yourself: Am I also showing up as the kind of friend, partner, or person I want to attract?
Because it's not just about finding people who bring positive energy into your life. It's also about being someone who contributes love, kindness, encouragement, and support to theirs. When you shine your light, you create space for others to shine theirs, too.
5. The Love You Give Yourself Sets the Standard
There's a saying that we accept the love we believe we deserve. I think there's something powerful about reflecting on that. When you struggle with self-worth, it can be easy to tolerate situations that don't truly make you happy because you're afraid of disappointing someone, losing a relationship, or being alone. As you begin healing, something shifts. You stop feeling the need to prove your worth to everyone. You stop chasing people who aren't showing up for you. You begin recognizing that love shouldn't require you to constantly abandon your own needs. You start understanding that you deserve relationships built on mutual respect, kindness, trust, and support. That doesn't mean loving yourself guarantees other people will treat you well. It means loving yourself gives you the confidence to recognize when you're not being treated well and the courage to respond differently.
You don't have to earn basic respect by giving more, doing more, or becoming someone you're not. You are already worthy of love and respect.
6. A November Self-Love and Boundaries Reset
As we begin this new month, I invite you to take a few minutes to reflect on your life.
Grab your journal, find a quiet place, and ask yourself these five questions:
Where in my life am I giving more of myself than I genuinely have the energy to give?
What behaviors or situations have I been accepting that no longer feel healthy for me?
Who in my life genuinely celebrates my growth, supports my happiness, and respects my boundaries?
What is one boundary I can begin practicing this November?
How can I show myself more love, compassion, and respect every day?
You don't have to change everything overnight. Healing isn't a race, and personal growth isn't about becoming perfect. It's about becoming more aware of yourself, taking responsibility for your choices, and making small changes that help you live a more authentic and fulfilling life. One boundary at a time. One decision at a time. One act of self-love at a time.
7. A New Month, A New Opportunity to Choose Yourself
As we welcome November, I want you to remember something.
You don't need permission to prioritize your peace.
You don't need to explain your worth to people who refuse to recognize it.
Youu don't have to continue carrying relationships, responsibilities, or expectations that are no longer yours to carry.
You can be kind without being available to everyone.
You can be generous without giving everything away.
You can love people without sacrificing your own happiness.
And you can continue growing without feeling guilty about the person you're becoming.
This November, I encourage you to stop focusing so much on who you're losing and begin appreciating the person you're becoming. Sometimes, the most beautiful thing that comes from letting go isn't what enters your life next. It's finally coming home to yourself, and that is where true self-love begins.
